The IAP Air Products P-1100-NPBI is a small axial fan that utilizes the GPS (Global Plasma Solutions) NPBI Ionizer. As this fan runs, it helps push ions from the ionizer through the airstream and into your room. This fan does not use any filters.
In short, no. NPBI stands for Needle Point Bipolar Ionization. This is not to be confused with the former Bi-polar Ionization technology. The former technology DID create potentially harmful amounts of ozone. However, the GPS NPBI Ionizer that we utilize in our units has earned the most stringent Zero Ozone Emissions Certification (UL 2998), which is considered the threshold for zero emissions. You can read more on that here: https://gpsair.com/zero-ozone-emissions
When the fan is plugged in and turned on, there will be an indicator light on the ionizer. If it is on, the ions are being released into your room!
It is possible that you see an increase in your HVAC filter load as ions attach to particles in your air, making them bigger and heavier. Your HVAC filter may start to catch particles it hadn’t previously caught.
Yes, GPS NPBI units are used in many applications where mold particles have been present. Most commonly, these units have been used in grow rooms where mold spores are the biggest concerns. Ions are released into the air stream and attach to mold spores in the air and on surfaces and neutralize them. No. In fact, the opposite is possible. Ions are generated through natural events such as: thunderstorms, sunlight, waterfalls, waves in the ocean. This is nature’s way of purifying the air. Ever been out on a hike in nature (on a hike or at the beach) and noticed that the air has a smell and taste that’s fresh? This is due to the ions in the air! The more ions in each space, the better the air quality. In fact, ion depletion is the largest contributing factor to poor indoor air quality and can lead to a condition called Sick Building Syndrome (SBS).
